Moving in Sawood: what to know first
Sawood Lane is the only way in. It leaves the B6141 and runs south as an ordinary lane as far as the hamlet; beyond that it carries on as a gated service track marked for official vehicles only, with a few more houses along it. If your address is past the gate, tell us when you book so the way in can be checked before the day. Expect field gates around the farms and send a photo of anything the van has to pass through.
Homes here are a handful of houses and farm buildings, so there is no street parking to compete for, but there is little room to turn a long van. Say where it can turn, a yard or a wide gateway, and whether the ground there is hard. The B6141 either side is a 60 mph moor road, so the van loads off the lane, never on the main road, and if snow or fog is forecast on the tops it is worth agreeing a back-up day.
Sawood: the local picture
Sawood sits on open moor among old water supply works. Two small air-shaft buildings stand out on the heather, the Thornton Moor Conduit runs past partly in open channel and partly in culvert, and disused filter beds sit on an embankment nearby. Sentry Hill rises close by, Cobling Farm is the nearest farmyard, and Bradshaw Head is a second hamlet a few hundred metres away.
The nearest places to eat or stay are on the B6141: the Dog and Gun Inn on Denholme Road and the Leeming Wells Hotel on Long Causeway. Bank Nook, two cottages of 1774 later made into one, is the closest old house on the heritage list. If there is a yard gate or a cattle grid between the lane and your door, mention it when you book.
How the van gets to Sawood
From Bradford the van takes Thornton Road, the B6145, west as far as the A629. A short way along Halifax Road it turns on to the B6141 Long Causeway, runs about two kilometres and then turns into Sawood Lane. Long Causeway and Denholme Road are both 60 mph roads here, so the turn needs to be signalled in good time.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 25 to 35 minutes. That is an estimate, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.

Frequently asked questions: man with a van in Sawood
Who handles bins and council tax at Sawood?
Bradford Council. Sawood is in Oxenhope civil parish and the Worth Valley ward, so bins and council tax go through Bradford, the same as for Oxenhope village itself.
Can the van go beyond the gate on Sawood Lane?
Only if you have the right to drive it. South of the hamlet the lane becomes a gated track marked for official vehicles, so if you live along it, tell us how you normally drive in and whether the gate is locked, and we will plan the van's approach before the day.
Does Sawood Lane lead straight down into Oxenhope?
Not directly. It comes out on the B6141 Denholme Road, which runs on as Station Road down into Oxenhope, about a mile and a half by road in all.
