Moving in Midgehole: what to know first
Midgehole lies low, by Hebden Water at the foot of Hardcastle Crags, and Midgehole Road, dropping in off the A6033, is the only tarmac. Visitors to the woods use the same road for the National Trust car parks, which charge, and the Blue Pig club has a private car park of its own, so check on the day whether cars have parked along the road and tell us how far your door is from the main road.
Beyond the road, Midgehole Lane is an unpaved bridleway, Crimsworth Lane a track and Carr Lane a cobbled bridleway with steps, so homes along them are reached on foot from the van. Crimsworth Terrace and Hebden Terrace are the rows on the road itself. If your home is one of the houses built back to earth, say which level your door is on and how many steps lead to it.
Midgehole: the local picture
Homes are few and close together: Hebden Terrace and Crimsworth Terrace, Midgehole Farm, and the Blue Pig, run as the Midgeholes Working Men's Club, with its own car park. The name Crimsworth Terrace goes with the brownfield site of the former Crimsworth Dye Works, beside the road, and Crimsworth Dean Beck runs a few hundred metres away. Raw Holme Farmhouse and Holme Cottage, a listed early 19th-century row, are built back to earth, two storeys at the front and one behind.
Hardcastle Crags is the draw: 400 acres of woodland, about two miles north of Hebden Bridge, with Gibson Mill half a mile up the valley. Because the same lane leads to the Midgehole car park for the woods, it is worth checking on the day whether visitors have parked along it. On the hill above, the 12.5 metre Wadsworth War Memorial obelisk of 1923 stands on Smeekin Hill.
How the van gets to Midgehole
The van comes up the A6033 Keighley Road from Hebden Bridge and turns off at Midgehole Road; a listed cast iron milepost just north of that junction gives the distances to Hebden Bridge and Keighley. From Bradford, through Halifax and the Calder Valley, allow roughly 40 to 50 minutes. There is a bus stop on Midgehole Road by the old dye works, so the van stops clear of it.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 40 to 50 minutes. That is an estimate, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.

Frequently asked questions: man with a van in Midgehole
My cottage is off Midgehole Lane. Will the van get to the door?
Probably not. Midgehole Lane is an unpaved bridleway, so the van stays on Midgehole Road and the rest is carried. Tell us roughly how far that is, and about any steps, when you ask for a price.
Do I need to pay for the van to park at Midgehole?
The National Trust car parks charge and the club car park is private. The van loads at your door wherever Midgehole Road allows; if it has to wait in a paid car park, tell us and it is allowed for in the price.
Is Midgehole in Hebden Bridge?
It has a Hebden Bridge postal address, HX7 7, but it is in Wadsworth parish rather than Hebden Royd, a short drive north of the town centre at the foot of Hardcastle Crags.
