Heptonstall: what to know before moving day
This was a hand-loom weaving village, and its cottages and terraces have large first-floor windows to light the looms. The parish has 140 listed buildings, most of them in the village, and Towngate alone has listed houses from the 17th and 18th centuries. Stag Cottage, of about 1580 in Stag Fold, is the oldest. In the mid-1980s the original stone setts were uncovered and kept after local protests, and OpenStreetMap shows setts or cobbles on Towngate, Smithwell Lane, West Laithe and Hepton Drive.
The landmarks are the shell of the old church of St Thomas Becket beside the newer St Thomas the Apostle, the octagonal Methodist chapel off Northgate from 1764, the museum in the old grammar school, the post office, and the Cross Inn and White Lion. Calderdale Council runs a car park off Towngate. The village draws day visitors in summer, so a weekday morning is worth considering for a move.
How the van gets to Heptonstall
From Hebden Bridge, Heptonstall Road leaves the A646 at Bridge Lanes and climbs to Towngate. Lee Wood Road branches off it on the way up, and OpenStreetMap marks one section as single-file with alternating priority; it carries on as Draper Lane to Slack Road on the west side. From Bradford the van comes through Halifax and up the Calder Valley to Hebden Bridge first.
