Moving in Low Springs: what to know first

Low Springs is a short run of houses on Potter Brow Road, a 30 mph road that runs down from Hawksworth Road towards Potter Brow Bridge over Hawksworth Gill. The houses face the road itself, so the van loads at the kerb or, better, on a drive where it can pull fully off. If yours has one, say so when you book, along with any gate the van needs to clear.

The roads either side are faster. Hawksworth Road at the top crosses the edge of Baildon Common at 50 mph, and Mill Lane, past the bridge towards Hawksworth, opens up to 60 mph and is closed to heavy goods vehicles; a Transit is not one, so the van can use it. Sconce Lane is a paved service lane that is also a public bridleway, unlit and without a pavement, so a house reached from it needs a word about the gate and the carry.

Low Springs: the local picture

Most of what surrounds it is open ground. Baildon Common lies to one side, Roundabout Wood and Howden Wood follow the gill, and the separate hamlet of Low Hill is a couple of hundred metres off. Old coal mine shafts are dotted across the common here, so the moor was worked long before it was walked. Moor Valley Caravan Park is close by, and down on Mill Lane the Hudsons Arms and the site of Low Mill, with its former mill pond, mark the valley bottom.

Potter Brow Road is a 30 mph asphalt road, but Hawksworth Road, which it joins a short way off, is a 50 mph road, and Sconce Lane is a bridleway. If your drive opens on to the faster road, mention it, so the van can pull fully off the carriageway to load.

How the van gets to Low Springs

From Bradford the van comes via Shipley: Canal Road (A6181), Valley Road and the A6038 Otley Road, then the B6151 up into Baildon, along Northgate and out on Hawksworth Road for about a kilometre to the Potter Brow Road turning, which puts Low Springs roughly 15 to 30 minutes from Bradford.

The drive from Bradford is roughly 15 to 30 minutes. That is an estimate, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.

Frequently asked questions: man with a van in Low Springs

Why is a BD17 address at Low Springs in Bingley parish?

Postcodes and parish lines were drawn separately. ONS data puts BD17 6BE in Bingley parish and the Bingley East ward, while BD17 6BD, about 200 metres away, is in Baildon parish, and LS20 8 postcodes within half a kilometre belong to Leeds. Give the full postcode and the driver will find the right house.

Can the van use Mill Lane towards Hawksworth?

Yes. Mill Lane is closed to heavy goods vehicles, but a Ford Transit is not one, so the van can come and go that way to Hawksworth and Guiseley. Beyond the bridge it is a fast 60 mph lane, so the van does not stop on it to load.

Can the van drive along Sconce Lane?

It can, with care. Sconce Lane is a paved service lane that doubles as a public bridleway, unlit and without a pavement, so walkers and riders use it too. Tell us if your home is reached from it and whether there is a gate to open.
