Moving in Dunkeswick: what to know first
Dunkeswick is small, a few dozen buildings reached from Weeton Lane and Old Road. Harrogate Road is a two-lane trunk road here, the A61 at 60 mph, so for a house facing it the van should load from the drive or round the corner on Weeton Lane rather than on the main road. Boundaries are mostly hedges and fences with field gates; say how far the door is from where a long van can stand. There is a bus stop on Harrogate Road at Weeton Lane.
Dunkeswick: the local picture
The name means a farm that made cheese, from Old English with a Norse k sound, and the Dun was added to tell it apart from East Keswick across the river. The houses lie along Weeton Lane and Old Road, close to Harrogate Road, with Hawthorn House Farm, which sells its own vegetables and eggs, and Moorend Farm nearby. Wharfedale Grange Farmhouse, a four-bay stone house of the early 19th century, is listed, and a 19th-century milestone on the A61 still reads Leeds and Harrogate Road, Dunkeswick.
Its boundaries have moved more than most. Dunkeswick was a township of Harewood, a parish of its own from 1866 to 1937, part of the City of Leeds from 1974, and only in 1992 was it moved into Kirkby Overblow and North Yorkshire. South-west of the houses, above the river, are the earthworks of Rougemont Castle, a ringwork that ran the Harewood manor until Harewood Castle replaced it in the 14th century.
How the van gets to Dunkeswick
Harrogate Road, the A61 from Leeds to Harrogate, crosses the Wharfe on Harewood Bridge and passes the hamlet; Weeton Lane leaves it westwards through Dunkeswick and Swindon Lane heads north towards Kirkby Overblow. The trip from Bradford is estimated at roughly 35 to 45 minutes.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 35 to 45 minutes. That is an estimate, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.
