North Rigton: what to know before moving day
Almscliffe Crag, the millstone grit outcrop on the hill next to the village, is the landmark everyone uses; it is a climbing crag and a Site of Special Scientific Interest, and it appeared in the Emmerdale opening titles from 1998 to 2005. The village itself is built round a few lanes: Hall Green Lane, Church Hill, Rigton Hill and High Moor Road, with smaller streets such as The Crescent, St John's Drive, Almscliffe Garth and Brackenwell Lane off them.
The Square and Compass is the village pub, St John's is the church, and North Rigton Church of England Primary School is in the village too. The parish has seven listed buildings: Tatefield Hall is a 16th century stone house with a barn and outbuilding of its own, Sycamore Farmhouse is gritstone and dated 1619, and the old village stocks are listed as well. For a house of that age, a quick measurement of the front door saves guesswork on the day.
How the van gets to North Rigton
The A658 is the route. It starts in Bradford, runs past Leeds Bradford Airport, where it goes through a tunnel under the runway, and carries on through Pool-in-Wharfedale and Huby towards Harrogate. North Rigton lies just off it, and the main lanes in the village are Hall Green Lane, Church Hill and Rigton Hill, with Crag Lane leading off. The Harrogate railway line runs nearby but there is no station in the village.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 35 to 45 minutes. That is an estimate from route data, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.
