Birstwith: what to know before moving day
Birstwith station, on the Nidd Valley line to Pateley Bridge, lost its passengers in 1951 and its goods yard in 1964. The yard was cleared and built on as Birstwith Grange, and two stone buildings of the old railway cottages still stand off it. The Station Hotel, opposite the former yard entrance, kept the name. Across the river, Birstwith Mill on Wreaks Road is still a working food plant.
The rest of the village is on Station Road, Nidd Lane, Nidd Drive, Nidd Rise, Broomfield, Collin Bank and West House Gardens. St James' Church, completed in 1857, and West House and Nidd House, dated 1795, are among the 14 listed buildings in the parish. There is a store and post office, a doctor's surgery and a Church of England primary school.
How the van gets to Birstwith
Several lanes meet in Birstwith: Clint Bank comes down from the B6165 at Burnt Yates, Wreaks Road and Elton Lane lead towards Hampsthwaite, and Darley Road runs west up the dale. From Harrogate the van can take the A59 west and turns north, or the A61 and the B6165 round by Ripley. Name the street when you book so the route can be chosen.
