Birkby: what to know before moving day
Birkby lies in the Grimescar Valley and stayed largely rural well into the 20th century, so old farmhouses survive among the later streets. 75 to 79 Birkby Hall Road is a group of stone houses dated 1719, and at Bay Hall a 16th-century house with a timber-framed core, restored and cased in stone in 1895, is now three houses at 23 to 27 Bay Hall. Birkby Grange and Birkby Lodge, the latter partly remodelled by Edgar Wood in 1900, are larger listed houses, and newer homes stand on the old Hopkinson's valve works site around Old Hopkinson Drive.
Shops and food outlets cluster at the east end of Blacker Road and north of St John's Road. Norman Park, with the Fartown and Birkby war memorial of 1921, is a good landmark, as are St Cuthbert's Church, the Vajrapani Kadampa Buddhist Centre and the mosques. For a house on a long street such as Blacker Road or Wheathouse Road, say which end you are nearer.
How the van gets to Birkby
St John's Road leaves Castlegate, the A62 ring road, and runs out through Birkby, with Blacker Road continuing from it to the north. Halifax Old Road and Birkby Hall Road cross the upper part of the suburb. From Bradford the van comes in on the A641 Bradford Road, which meets the ring road close to the St John's Road turn.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 25 to 40 minutes. That is an estimate from route data, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.
