Askwith: what to know before moving day
For its size the village is well served: a primary school of around 80 pupils, a pub (The Penny Bun on the map), a village hall, a garden nursery and an annual show with a dog show and horse classes. All 15 listed buildings in the parish are Grade II, and nearly all are gritstone with stone slate roofs. The Manor House and Sundial Farmhouse both carry the date 1681, Shaw Hall is dated 1687, and Quaker Cottage was built in 1704 as a Friends' Meeting House.
Low Snowden, a farmhouse with a timber-framed core, was cased in gritstone in 1683. At the edge of the parish, the East Lodges at the entrance to Denton Park were designed by John Carr, probably in 1778. How the van gets to Askwith
Askwith Lane and West Lane meet in the village, with Hall Lane heading north towards the moor side farms and Leather Bank close by. The link east is Weston Lane, which runs through Weston village to Otley, so from Bradford the van can come into Otley on the A6038 and out along the north bank. Weston Lane also leads west from here towards Ilkley.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 35 to 45 minutes. That is an estimate from route data, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.

Why do old deeds sometimes say Asquith instead of Askwith?
Both spellings have been used. Baines listed the village as Asquith in 1822, and Lewis in 1848 wrote Askwith, or Asquith. The name comes from the Old Norse for ash wood. Whatever the paperwork says, the postcode is what the van follows.
