Burley in Wharfedale: what to know before moving day
Main Street is the old centre, and many of its buildings are Grade II listed: a terrace of twelve stone houses at 86 to 112 Main Street from about 1820, cottages and shops from the 17th century to the 1840s, the Old Grammar School, and The Grange, a Gothic Revival house of 1840 with corner turrets. The White Horse, the Red Lion and the Queens Head on Main Street, and the Queen's Hall, first built as a lecture hall for mill workers, are all easy landmarks to give.
Greenholme Mills, the cotton mills that made Burley an industrial village, have been converted to flats, and the old Scalebor Park Hospital is now townhouses and flats. Council housing was built in the 1920s and 1950s, with further development in the later 20th century, so a Burley move can be anything from a mill apartment to a stone cottage.
Burley-in-Wharfedale station opened in 1865 on the Wharfedale line and has direct trains to Leeds, Bradford Forster Square and Ilkley. It is unstaffed, and its two platforms are joined by a footbridge, with step-free access to each from nearby streets.
How the van gets to Burley in Wharfedale
The A65 Burley Bypass, opened in 1995, carries through traffic past the village, and Main Street joins the A65. Station Road runs from Main Street to the station and on to Moor Lane, with Grange Road, Langford Lane and Manse Road off it, and Grange Road has the library and Grange Park surgery. Main Street has a 30 mph limit and Sun Lane 20 mph, so allow time for the last stretch.
