Weston: what to know before moving day
Weston is small but old. All Saints' Church is in the Domesday Book, is mostly Norman and is Grade I listed; its bells were stolen in 1990 and, once recovered, turned out to be among the oldest in Britain, one from at least 1200. Weston Hall, a gritstone country house of about 1600, and the three-storey banqueting house tower in its grounds are both Grade I as well. The parish has 16 listed buildings, most of them gritstone farmhouses and barns with stone slate roofs, such as Hall Farmhouse and Weston Grange.
Keep the village and the Weston estate apart when you book. The estate is a housing estate on Weston Lane between the village and Newall, inside Otley and West Yorkshire, with streets such as Weston Drive, Meagill Rise and Hollin Gate. Gallows Hill, at the east end of the village, held German prisoners of war until 1948, and most of that site was cleared for the estate. If you are moving out of one of the 17th-century farmhouses, measure the doorways and stairs before booking large furniture.
How the van gets to Weston
Weston Lane is the way in from Otley. It leaves Newall, runs past the estate at 20 mph and carries on west to the village, and it also continues towards Askwith and Ilkley. Church Lane, Hall Lane and Moor Lane lead off it. Nothing crosses the Wharfe between Weston and Burley, even though the A65 Burley Bypass is just over the river, so from Bradford the van comes in on Bradford Road, the A6038, and crosses Otley Bridge.
