Whittlefield: what to know before moving day
The motorway reshaped the district. Whittlefield Mills and the old Burnley Barracks were demolished to make way for the M65, and the Whittlefield motorway aqueduct, built in 1980, is believed to be the first canal aqueduct over a motorway in the UK. In the 1980s and 1990s developers including Bovis, Barratt and Wainhomes built large estates across Whittlefield and Ightenhill, mostly on greenfield land.
Tunnel Street is the local link, meeting Allerton Drive, Cotton Street, Cairo Street, Dale Street, Ighten Road and Pendle Way, and the estate roads are 20 mph. Whittlefield Primary School is on Tabor Street. Pendle Way also has a Holiday Inn Express, and a Travelodge is on Barracks Road, close to Burnley Barracks station, which has hourly trains to Colne and Preston on weekdays.
How the van gets to Whittlefield
Coming from Bradford the van joins the M65 at Colne and leaves at junction 10, the Burnley Barracks Interchange, where the A671 Padiham Road and Cavalry Way meet the motorway. Pendle Way runs from the interchange into the estates, and Tunnel Street and Ighten Road lead on from it.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 50 to 65 minutes. That is an estimate from route data, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.
