Tong: what to know before moving day
For about 400 years the Tempest family held the manor and discouraged new building, so the layout today is very close to a map of 1725: a single line of houses, farmsteads and estate cottages along Tong Lane. Tong Hall, built in 1702 for Sir George Tempest, is Grade I listed, as is St James' Church, rebuilt in 1727; the village school followed in 1736. Using red brick alongside local gritstone makes the conservation area unique in Bradford for its materials.
Many of the houses are Grade II listed, among them the Manor House on Keeper Lane, 3 and 5 Tong Lane, the Old Vicarage and Church Farmhouse. The Greyhound, once an estate building, is listed too, and near the middle of the village a pinfold, trough and stone pump dated 1849 survive as a listed group. The former schoolroom opposite the church is now The Old School Room community centre, and Tong Park Hotel is also on Tong Lane.
How the van gets to Tong
Tong Lane leaves Westgate Hill Street, the B6135, which meets the A650 on the Bradford side, and it is the village's main thoroughfare. Keeper Lane, Dawson Lane, Spring Field Lane and New Lane branch off it. The limit through the village is 30 mph, and with most houses fronting the lane itself, the van loads on Tong Lane or the nearest side lane. The run out to Tong Lane takes roughly 15 to 30 minutes from Bradford, depending on the A650.

Why is Tong Street so different from Tong village?
Tong Street is further west, on the A650, where the Tong estate sold land that was then developed for industry, shops and housing. Tong village is the conservation area along Tong Lane, so give the full address and postcode.
Which ward is Tong in now?
Postcodes in the village, such as BD4 0SD, are listed in the Holme Wood and Bierley ward of Bradford Council. Tong is unparished, so Bradford Council is the only tier of local government, including for bins and council tax.
