Dudley Hill: what to know before moving day
Three turnpike roads met here in the 18th and early 19th centuries: Rooley Lane, the Bradford to Wakefield road and Sticker Lane. Trams arrived in 1903, and in 1911 Britain's first trolleybus service ran from Laisterdyke to Dudley Hill; the service ended in 1972 as the last trolleybus route in the country. Dudley Hill also had a railway station until passenger trains stopped in 1952.
Methodist chapels and mills followed in the 19th century, and Wesleyan Terrace is among the streets today. The 600-seat Picture Palace on Tong Street, opened in 1912, is the only listed building in Dudley Hill. Today the district has a police station, a post office, the Rooley Lane Medical Centre and a range of shops, and the UK headquarters of Hallmark Cards is here. Knowles Park and St Columba's Catholic Primary School are useful landmarks for streets off Knowles Lane and Holmewood Road.
How the van gets to Dudley Hill
Dudley Hill roundabout is an elevated junction on the A6177 ring road, with slip roads to and from the A650 Wakefield Road below. Sticker Lane runs north from it towards Laisterdyke, Rooley Lane runs west towards the M606 at Staygate, and Tong Street carries the A650 on to the south-east. Rook Lane, Knowles Lane and Fenby Avenue are the local roads off it.
