Moving in The Lumb: what to know first
Lumb Lane is the only made road to the houses, and it is a steep one, climbing the whole way up the hillside with The Lumb part-way down. There are only a dozen or so buildings and no parking areas beyond roadside strips, so the van turns where the owner says there is room and loads beside the gate. Send a photo of the gateway and the drive before the day.
Clough Hall Lane, nearby, is a rough track that narrows to a path in places, and Castle Hill Side has no pavement, so neither is a way in for the van: it comes down Lumb Lane and goes back up the same way. Say whether there is room to turn at your gate.
The Lumb: the local picture
Both of the named houses are 18th-century and listed. The one listed simply as Lumb is stone under a stone slate roof, with mullioned windows and some lights blocked; The Lumb itself has two three-light windows on the ground floor and a 14-light window running along the upper floor. Lower Castle Hill Farmhouse, about 270 metres off, is an L-shaped farmhouse and barn of the 18th century or earlier, and Lumb Head Farm is nearby.
Molly Carr Wood and the Lumb Dike stream are within about 200 metres, and Clough Hall Lane, a compacted track about 3 metres wide, is recorded as a byway open to all traffic. With the nearest postcode more than 300 metres from the houses, a map pin sent with the booking saves any hunting on the day.
How the van gets to The Lumb
The usual route runs through Dalton and up Almondbury Bank into the village, along Northgate, Westgate and Sharp Lane, then about 1.2 km down Lumb Lane to the end. Roughly 35 to 50 minutes is the Bradford estimate.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 35 to 50 minutes. That is an estimate, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.

Frequently asked questions: man with a van in The Lumb
Our house has no street number. What should I give you?
The house name, Lumb Lane and HD4 6TA, plus a map pin if you can. Tell us whether there is room to turn a long van at your end of the lane.
Are the houses at The Lumb listed?
Yes. Lumb and The Lumb are both 18th-century listed houses with mullioned windows, and Lower Castle Hill Farmhouse nearby is listed too. Old doorways and stairs can be tight, so measure wardrobes and sofas before the day.
Which way in is better, from Almondbury or from Newsome?
It depends on where the house is on Lumb Lane. From Almondbury the van comes along Sharp Lane; from Newsome it takes Ashes Lane and Castle Hill Side beneath the hill. Tell us which end you are nearer and we will pick the side with room to turn.
