Almondbury: what to know before moving day
The village core is older than most of Huddersfield. All Hallows Church is Grade I listed, the 16th-century Wormald's Hall is now the Conservative club, and King James's School traces its royal charter to 1608. Along Northgate and Townend many houses are listed stone buildings: 42 to 46 Townend probably date from the 17th century and 49 Townend from the early 18th, while Northgate has 19th-century houses with mullioned windows, a K6 telephone kiosk and a timber police box from the 1920s or 1930s.
Away from that core the streets are later: De Lacy Avenue, named after the family who held the land after the Norman Conquest, Fernside Avenue with Hill View Academy, and the roads around Benomley Road and Southfield Road. Almondbury Library, the post office, a Co-op and the Northgate car park are in the village. For a listed cottage on Townend, measure the front door and the turn of the stairs before booking a wardrobe or a large sofa.
How the van gets to Almondbury
The usual way up is from Moldgreen. The A629 Wakefield Road runs out of the town centre through Moldgreen, and Almondbury Bank leaves it and climbs south-east to the village, arriving by Town End and Fernside Avenue. Inside the village the van uses Northgate, Westgate, St Helen's Gate and Thorpe Lane. From Bradford that means getting to the Wakefield Road side of Huddersfield first, by the A641 or the M62.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 30 to 40 minutes. That is an estimate from route data, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.

Was Almondbury ever more important than Huddersfield?
For a long time, yes. Almondbury was the centre of a large parish that included Linthwaite, Lockwood, Honley, Holmfirth and Meltham, and for 300 years until the 17th century its Monday market was the most important in the area. The civil parish was abolished on 1 April 1924 and merged with Huddersfield.
