Stainburn: what to know before moving day
St Mary's Church is the reason most people have heard of Stainburn. It is a Norman church, Grade I listed and now in the care of the Churches Conservation Trust, restored in 1894 but keeping its Norman chancel arch and font and oak pews from about 1600. The village is not built along a street: houses and farms are spread along Church Lane, Low Lane and Dark Lane, with Glebe Farm, Hilltop Farm and Townend Farm among the names on the map.
Stainburn Forest, on the edge of Nidderdale, is mostly conifer, with pine, larch and spruce on the slope of Norwood Edge and a spruce plateau to the east, and it is known for mountain bike trails such as the Warren Boulder Trail. Stainburn Moor has a car park for walkers and riders. Almscliffe Crag sits on the boundary between Stainburn and North Rigton parishes.
How the van gets to Stainburn
The lanes into Stainburn leave the B6161, Leathley Lane, which runs from Pool-in-Wharfedale up past Leathley towards Killinghall. Stainburn Lane climbs from Leathley through Braythorn, and Low Lane heads east out of the village. From Bradford, one way is the A658 to Pool and then the B6161 north.
