Leathley: what to know before moving day
For a parish of 181 people at the 2011 census, Leathley has a great deal of listed stone: 21 buildings on the National Heritage List. St Oswald's Church, with a Norman tower, is Grade I, and a set of stocks and a mounting block stand near its east gate. The almshouses of 1769, built as a school flanked by almshouses, Leathley Hall and its stable block, a mid-18th century corn mill and a 1935 K6 telephone kiosk are listed too. Most of the older houses are gritstone with stone slate roofs.
Leathley was in the West Riding until 1974 and in the Borough of Harrogate until 2023. Although Pool and Otley, on the other side of the river, are in Leeds, Leathley's bins and council tax go through North Yorkshire Council. The village hall is on the map near the church, and Stainburn Lane climbs out of the village north-east towards Braythorn and Stainburn.
How the van gets to Leathley
The B6161, here called Leathley Lane, is the road through the village: south it drops towards Pool-in-Wharfedale and meets the A658 Harrogate Road, and north it runs on towards Killinghall. The A658 starts in Bradford, passes Leeds Bradford Airport in a tunnel under the runway and crosses the Wharfe on Pool Bridge, an 18th-century sandstone bridge of seven arches listed with the parish. Cinder Lane is the smaller road west towards Lindley.
