The old core is around St Wilfrid's Church, rebuilt in 1838 to 1840 to a design by R. D. Chantrell, with the 1923 war memorial by the road junction beside it. Several stone houses nearby are Grade II listed, including the Manor House and Penndene, Pool Hall, a 16th-century farmhouse later divided, and Pool Farmhouse of 1725. Pool Bridge, built in 1754 and widened in 1815, carries Main Street over the river on seven arches.
The village has grown quickly, from 1,785 people in 2001 to 2,284 in 2011, and newer closes such as Oakdale Park, Mulberry Chase, Bramble Grove and Swallow Drive sit around the older streets. There is a post office, a pharmacy, a primary school, a petrol station, the sports and social club with the village hall, and Pool AFC's ground on Arthington Lane. The River Wharfe is prone to flooding.
How the van gets to Pool-in-Wharfedale
Main Street is the A658, the Bradford to Harrogate road, which arrives from the south down Pool Bank. Arthington Lane (A659) heads east to Arthington and Harewood, Pool Road (A659) runs west to Otley, and Leathley Lane, the B6161, branches off towards Leathley.
