Moving in Saltergate Hill: what to know first
Saltergate Hill is a handful of farms and houses spread along the A59 and the lanes either side. Burley Bank Road and Hollins Lane are 60 mph like the main road, while West Lane is a minor lane. Stone walls outnumber hedges here, and there are two cattle grids on the farm lanes. If the house is reached by a drive or a farm gate, a photo of the gateway and the yard helps plan where the van stops and turns. The Nelson Inn is the landmark to give the driver.
Saltergate Hill: the local picture
Saltergate Hill Farmhouse is the old core: a mid 17th-century gritstone house, partly rebuilt, on an L plan with mullioned windows, some under hood moulds, and it is listed. The Nelson Inn stands close by on the main road, and an Ordnance Survey trig point named Mount Pleasant stands just north. West Lane Farm, South View Farm, Shutt Nook Farm and Four Lane Ends Farm are spread along the lanes around it.
Two of those farms, Shutt Nook and Dyke Bottom, host small Caravan and Motorhome Club sites for members, so there may be a touring caravan or two on the farm lanes. Saltergate Beck, marked on older maps as Cow Dyke Beck, runs down the slope, and the Saltergate Business Park is about 700 metres south. For a farmhouse or cottage set back from the road, say how long the drive is.
How the van gets to Saltergate Hill
Everything hangs off the A59 Skipton Road, a 60 mph road here, so the turn into a house or farm drive needs care. West Lane heads north towards West Lane Farm, Rowden Lane leaves the A59 at Rowden Lane End, and Burley Bank Road is close by. From Bradford the A658 leads to Harrogate and the A59 west out of it; allow roughly 40 to 55 minutes as an estimate.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 40 to 55 minutes. That is an estimate, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.

Frequently asked questions: man with a van in Saltergate Hill
The A59 is fast outside my house. Where will the van stop?
Ideally off the carriageway, on your drive or in a lay-by or farm entrance. Tell us what is outside your door; if there is nowhere safe, we will agree a spot on West Lane or at the inn beforehand.
Saltergate Hill and Harrogate's Saltergate share a name. Are they near each other?
Not really. They share a ward name but not a parish. Saltergate Hill is in Hampsthwaite parish out on the A59, while the Saltergate schools and houses are on the Jennyfields side of town.
Which buses run past Saltergate Hill?
Two routes use this stretch of the A59: the 24 between Harrogate and Pateley Bridge, and the 59 between Harrogate and Skipton. Either is a way back to town for anyone not riding with the van.
