Gisburn Road, the A682, is the spine. Along it and just off it are some of the oldest homes in the parish: 239 to 247 Gisburn Road is a mid 18th-century terrace of former weavers' cottages, Holt Square and Fold began as a house of about 1600 later split into four dwellings, and 13 to 17 Foreside are cottages of 1755. How the van gets to Higherford
From Colne the B6247, Colne Road, drops to the A682 at Barrowford, passing the old toll house at the junction, and Gisburn Road carries on north through Higherford towards Blacko and Gisburn. Barnoldswick Road also leaves Higherford, climbing north-east towards Blacko.
