Colne cottage stairs, sofa beds and the front-room door
Up the hill and out towards Trawden, Winewall and Laneshaw Bridge, older stone cottages have low ceilings and stairs that twist as they climb. A king-size divan in two halves may still go up, but a solid headboard or a one-piece frame will usually have to be unbolted and rebuilt in the bedroom, which is done for beds you already own. Mattresses travel in a cover, flat or on their side, never folded. A brand-new bed still in its boxes is yours to put together.
In the terraced rows the sofa goes from the kerb, up any steps and straight into the front room, with little space to swing it. Feet unscrew, some backs lift off, and a three-seater is stood on its end to clear the frame. Sofa beds and powered recliners weigh far more than they look, so mention them. If you are buying from a shop in Burnley, Keighley or Leeds, ask for the wrapped size as well as the finished size.
Numbers to have ready before a sofa or bed comes to Colne
- Front door width with the door fully open, and the height of the frame
- Headroom and width at the turn of the stairs, for any bed going up
- On a stepped Primet Bridge or Horsfield row, count the steps that rise from the pavement and say whether there is a handrail
- Whether the sofa bed or recliner has a metal mechanism, which adds real weight
- Your existing bed frame can be taken apart and rebuilt; new boxed furniture is left for you to build
- The sofa being replaced stays with you; check what Pendle Council's bulky waste service takes
Colne and nearby homes where a sofa or bed takes extra planning
- Trawden and Winewallstone cottages with narrow winding stairs up to the bedrooms
- Laneshaw Bridgehouses facing the A6068 on the Yorkshire side, so the van stops on a through road and unloads briskly
- Primet Bridgetiered terraces with a flight of steps before the door
- Albert Roadflats above shops, where a mattress goes up a straight narrow stair
- Colne Edgehouses up on the moor side, where a photo of the approach helps before a big sofa comes

Sofa & Bed Delivery in Colne: your questions
My new sofa is sitting at the shop's warehouse. Can you fetch it?
Yes. Send the order reference, the warehouse address and its collection hours, and the Colne slot is booked around them.
Can you move a sofa from one Colne house to another?
Yes, it is the same job with both ends in town. Tell us about the steps and doors at each house.
What if it jams on the stair turn?
We stop rather than force it and talk the options through with you, which may mean the piece goes in another room or back to the seller.
Will a king-size mattress go up a cottage stair?
A mattress is carried flat or on its side and never folded, so a deep king-size needs enough width and headroom at the turn. Send a photo of the stairs from the bottom for an honest view.
