Turning a sofa through a Nelson terrace front door
In the older terraces around the centre, Bradley and Whitefield, the front door opens straight into the living room. That is good news for a sofa, which does not have to climb, but the door frame is narrow and the room behind it is small, so a three-seater has to come in on its end and swing round. A corner sofa usually splits into sections, and the feet unscrew to save a few centimetres. Measure the door and the diagonal of the room before the sofa leaves the shop.
A bed is the opposite problem. The frame and the mattress have to go upstairs, and terrace stairs are steep with a tight turn on the landing. Bed frames are taken apart downstairs and rebuilt in the bedroom, which is part of the price, and a mattress goes up in its cover, bent only as far as it allows. A divan base is the awkward one: send its size, because a solid base cannot be folded.
Measuring a Nelson home for a new sofa or bed
- Measure the front door width and height, then the depth of the sofa with the legs off
- Clear the front room before the van arrives, because there is little space to turn in a terrace
- Tell us whether the street is one-way, so the van stops on the side the door is on
- Send the size of a divan base and the turn at the top of the stairs
- The old sofa stays with you: Pendle Council runs a free bulky waste collection that you book yourself

Sofa Delivery in Nelson: your questions
Will a three-seater fit through a terrace front door?
Usually, on its end and with the feet off, but measure first. The door width, the door height and the depth of the sofa are the three numbers to send.
Do you put the bed together upstairs?
Yes. The frame is taken apart where it needs to be, carried up and rebuilt in the bedroom. That is included in the fixed price.
Can you take the old sofa away?
No. Nothing old leaves with the van. Book Pendle Council's free bulky waste collection, or offer a sofa that still has life in it to a charity.
