Front room or back yard: the way into a Nelson kitchen
The terraces built for Nelson's mill workers have their kitchens at the rear, often with a yard and a gate onto a back street. When the back street is clear, that is the shorter way in for a heavy appliance: no carpet to cross, no front-room furniture to move. When it is blocked by parked cars or is too narrow for the van, the machine goes in through the front door on a trolley. Tell us which you have, and send a photo of the back gate if you are not sure.
Connection is limited to one thing: a washing machine's cold feed and waste hose, on standard fittings. Dishwashers, cookers and anything gas or hard-wired are for a plumber, an electrician or a Gas Safe engineer. A fridge freezer is brought in and stood in place, and a tall one is checked before booking, so send the height or the model. Ask the shop or seller to fit the transit bolts into a used washing machine before it travels.
Readying a Nelson kitchen for a new machine
- Measure the gap under the worktop and the narrowest door on the way to the kitchen
- Say whether the back street is clear enough for the van to stand at the yard gate
- Turn off the cold supply and have the waste pipe free before the machine arrives
- A tall fridge freezer is checked before booking: send the model or the height
- Old appliances stay with you; Pendle Council's bulky waste service collects them for free

Appliance Delivery in Nelson: your questions
Can you plumb in my new washing machine?
Only the cold feed and the waste hose, where the fittings are standard. Anything beyond that, including dishwashers and cookers, needs a plumber or an electrician.
Will you take the old machine with you?
No. We do not remove old appliances. Pendle Council runs a free bulky waste collection, and some retailers offer take-back when you buy.
Can you bring the machine in through the back yard?
Yes, if the back street is clear and wide enough to stop at the gate. Send a photo of the back street and the gate and we will say which way works.
