Student Removals in Colne

Colne has no campus of its own, and its students go two ways: west down the M65 to the University of Lancashire's Burnley campus and on to Preston, or across the Pennines to Leeds, Huddersfield and Manchester. Either way the room usually starts halfway up a gritstone hillside.

Tiered terraces, and which way you leave Lancashire

The M65 ends at Colne, which shapes every journey out of it. Head west and you are on motorway within minutes - the Burnley campus is a few junctions down and Preston not much further. Head the other way and it is the A6068 over open moorland towards Keighley and Bradford, the first road round here to fog up, flood or close for snow. For a September date that is fine. For a January return we build slack in.

Loading is a hillside problem. The stone two-up two-downs run in grid-iron rows down the North Valley and along Colne Water towards Primet Bridge, built in tiers with retaining walls and flights of steps between the pavement and the front door. The back streets behind them are unadopted cobbled ginnels, too narrow for a van whatever a map suggests, so everything comes out of the front and down to whichever wider road we can stand on.

What Colne student removals usually involves

  • Town-centre parking is free but the short-stay council car parks need a parking disc displayed, which catches out drivers from the Yorkshire side - we carry one
  • Albert Road, Market Street and the lanes dropping off the ridge are narrow, sloped and carry loading restrictions, so we often work from the bottom of the hill
  • The Colne roundabout at the end of the M65 backs up badly at Boundary Mill times, worth planning around when a slot is booked
  • Bay suspensions on the tighter terraced streets go through Pendle Borough Council and are worth arranging for a full room's worth
  • The A6068 moor crossing is the part of a Bradford run to allow for in bad weather, and there is still no travel surcharge either way

Where in Colne we work

  • North Valley Roadthe densest terracing in town, tiered rows with steps up from the pavement
  • Primet Bridge and Watersidestreets along Colne Water where the van has to work from the wider road
  • Albert Road and Market Streetthe ridge-top centre, sloped, narrow and restricted for loading
  • Colne Edge and Winewallmoor-edge cottages, a longer carry and a careful approach
  • Laneshaw Bridgethe first part of town you reach coming in over the A6068 from Keighley
  • Keighley Road and Skipton Roadthe Yorkshire-facing roads out, and how most cross-Pennine jobs leave

If your street isn't listed it's almost certainly still covered, Colne and the surrounding BB8 postcodes are all inside our normal working area.

Common Colne runs

  • Colne → Prestondown the M65 the whole way, the standard September run for a Lancashire university
  • Colne → Burnleya few junctions west for the University of Lancashire campus, easily done in a morning
  • Colne → Bradfordthe A6068 over the tops to Keighley then the A650, forty to fifty-five minutes in decent weather

What it costs

A Colne move is priced on the load and the hours, with the moorland crossing built into the quote from the start rather than added as a surcharge. Colne is a 20-mile run from Bradford, so it's booked as a planned slot and the driving time is built into one fixed price. You get that price before we set off, not after. Frequently asked questions: student removals in Colne

Is there a university in Colne?

No. Nelson and Colne College covers sixteen to eighteen, but degree students go to Preston, to the University of Lancashire's campus at Burnley down the M65, or across the Pennines to Leeds, Huddersfield and Manchester. Our Colne student work is outbound in September and back home in June.

Can you get to a terrace with steps on the North Valley?

Yes, and it is the usual shape of a job here. The van stands on the widest road we can reach, we carry down with a trolley and take the mattress on its side. There is no back access on those rows - the ginnels are cobbled and too narrow - so it all goes out of the front.

Is the moor road a problem in winter?

It can be. The A6068 is high and exposed and among the first local roads closed for snow or ice, and there is no motorway link from here to Bradford. We watch the forecast, give ourselves more time, and say honestly if a date needs shifting rather than setting off and getting stuck on the tops.
