Tiered terraces, and which way you leave Lancashire
The M65 ends at Colne, which shapes every journey out of it. Head west and you are on motorway within minutes - the Burnley campus is a few junctions down and Preston not much further. Head the other way and it is the A6068 over open moorland towards Keighley and Bradford, the first road round here to fog up, flood or close for snow. For a September date that is fine. For a January return we build slack in.
Loading is a hillside problem. The stone two-up two-downs run in grid-iron rows down the North Valley and along Colne Water towards Primet Bridge, built in tiers with retaining walls and flights of steps between the pavement and the front door. The back streets behind them are unadopted cobbled ginnels, too narrow for a van whatever a map suggests, so everything comes out of the front and down to whichever wider road we can stand on.

- Town-centre parking is free but the short-stay council car parks need a parking disc displayed, which catches out drivers from the Yorkshire side - we carry one

Is there a university in Colne?
No. Nelson and Colne College covers sixteen to eighteen, but degree students go to Preston, to the University of Lancashire's campus at Burnley down the M65, or across the Pennines to Leeds, Huddersfield and Manchester. Our Colne student work is outbound in September and back home in June.
Can you get to a terrace with steps on the North Valley?
Yes, and it is the usual shape of a job here. The van stands on the widest road we can reach, we carry down with a trolley and take the mattress on its side. There is no back access on those rows - the ginnels are cobbled and too narrow - so it all goes out of the front.
Is the moor road a problem in winter?
It can be. The A6068 is high and exposed and among the first local roads closed for snow or ice, and there is no motorway link from here to Bradford. We watch the forecast, give ourselves more time, and say honestly if a date needs shifting rather than setting off and getting stuck on the tops.
