Blacko: what to know before moving day
Stansfield Tower, also called Blacko Tower, is the landmark you will be asked about: a circular stone folly of about 1890 on the hill above the village, built by a local grocer, Jonathan Stansfield. Down on Gisburn Road are the Rising Sun Inn, the listed 1921 war memorial in its roadside enclosure and, nearby, Blacko Primary School and the Evangelical Chapel.
Most of the listed homes are 17th and 18th-century stone farmhouses, among them Blacko Laithe Farmhouse, Manor House and Admergill Hall, which began as three cottages. The Cross Gaits Inn dates from 1736. Spring Field Mill, a cotton weaving mill that closed in the 1970s, is gone, and a small housing estate stands on its site; OpenStreetMap shows closes such as Malkin Close, Hollin Fold and Springfield off the main road. The Blacko Show fills the recreation ground each September, so mention it if your move falls that weekend.
How the van gets to Blacko
The A682, Gisburn Road, runs through Blacko from Barrowford and Higherford in the south towards Gisburn. From Bradford the van comes into Lancashire at Colne and uses the B6247 to reach Barrowford, then heads north. Blacko Bar Road is the lane west to Roughlee, and Barnoldswick Road links the eastern side of the parish back to Higherford.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 50 to 65 minutes. That is an estimate from route data, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.
