Moving in Hew Green: what to know first
Hew Green has no through road of its own: the four lanes that meet here are minor tarmac lanes, and the nearest proper through routes are Back Road and New Road towards Swarcliffe and Birstwith. The houses are spread across the surrounding fields, which are divided mostly by fences, with stone walls and hedges as well. Loading in the junction itself would block all four lanes, so the van stops on the lane your door faces or in a drive. If the lane outside is too narrow to pass, warn the neighbours about the morning.
Hew Green: the local picture
The four lanes are Emmet Lane, High Lane, Crowhill Lane and Swalewood Lane, all unclassified tarmac lanes. That makes the hamlet easy to describe and easy to get wrong: tell us which lane your door faces. The Cow Shed is one of the named buildings by the junction. Swarcliffe Top is the next cluster about 400 metres north, High Birstwith a similar distance south, and Meg Gate lies to the north-east.
Red Dike runs in a small valley just north, below Swale's Wood. The older buildings of the parish are within a kilometre: Oldstead, a late 17th-century gritstone house with a pantile roof, and Tang House, dated 1754, whose cottage has a cruck-framed core under thatch. Belmont Grosvenor School, taking children up to 11, is at the Swarcliffe end.

Frequently asked questions: man with a van in Hew Green
All four lanes meet at Hew Green. Does it matter which one I give?
Yes. A house on High Lane and one on Crowhill Lane can be a few metres apart but face different ways, and the van needs to stop on the right side. The lane name and HG3 2JL or 2JJ settle it.
How does Hew Green relate to Swarcliffe?
It is a separate hamlet, south of Swarcliffe Top, though both are in Birstwith parish. Give Hew Green and your lane when you book.
Is there a bus near Hew Green?
Not on the four lanes. The nearest is the 24 between Harrogate and Pateley Bridge, which runs near Swarcliffe, just over half a mile north by road.
