Denton: what to know before moving day
Much of what stands in Denton dates from the estate's rebuilding in the 1770s. Denton Hall, a country house of 1772 to 1776 by John Carr, is the landmark, and its stables and coach house of 1776, also by Carr, have been converted into homes. St Helen's Church, probably also Carr's, is known for windows painted straight onto the glass instead of stained. The village houses include Church Row, a gritstone terrace of six, School Row, and the Old School and Schoolhouse.
Small details help the driver find you: The Fountain, an old stone well-head, and a listed K6 telephone kiosk of 1935 stand in the village. Thomas Fairfax, first Lord Fairfax of Cameron, built up the estate, and at the 2011 census the parish had fewer than 100 people.
How the van gets to Denton
The approach is from Ilkley: across the Wharfe and east along Denton Road, which runs through the village with Smithy Lane leading off. From Bradford the route data follows the A65 past Burley in Wharfedale into Ilkley before crossing the river.
