The half-landing, not the front door, is what stops a sofa
Wells Road and the Middleton side are lined with big Victorian and Edwardian villas, three storeys with cellars and no lift. The front door is usually generous. The half-landing is not: one flight, a turn, and a newel post sitting exactly where the corner of a three-seater wants to travel. Measure the diagonal across that turn before you buy, because feet off and an end-on lift only get you so far.
Getting to the door has its own problem. Many of those villas sit behind long gravel or setted drives with no turning space, so the van goes in nose-first and reverses back out to the road, which is fine empty and slower with a corner unit on board. The downsizing job is the common one here: old settee out of the villa and away, apartment-sized new one in, both ends inside the town on the same afternoon.
What Ilkley sofa & bed delivery usually involves
- Ilkley is fifteen miles by the route a loaded van actually takes, the A650 to Shipley, the A6038 over Hollins Hill, then the A65 through Menston and Burley in Wharfedale, and there is no travel surcharge for it
- Station Road and the town-centre car parks are pay-and-display every day from 8am to 6pm with a three-hour maximum and no return within three hours, so we work to a planned slot rather than sitting outside all morning
- Regent Road, Wells Road, Bolton Bridge Road and Bridge Lane mix resident permits with pay-and-display on those same hours, and Springs Lane is no waiting at any time
- Feet, bolt-on arms and headboards come off and go back on, divan bases go up as two halves, and a mattress travels flat or on edge and is never folded
- The old settee can be carried out and taken away on the same visit as the new one arrives, if you want it gone; that is the one item collected, not a whole property cleared
Where in Ilkley we work
- Wells Roadbig villas with original staircases and half-landings, parked both sides and often behind a long drive
- The Grove and Brook Streetthe conservation-area core, narrow pavements and restricted kerb space, so a short stop and a carry
- Ashlandsstone through-terraces near the station where the stair turn matters more than the doorway
- Ben Rhyddingsubstantial detached houses in generous plots, the easiest carries in the town
- MiddletonCurly Hill, Nesfield Road and Langbar Road climb steeply and blind, with no turning space for a long van
- Burley in Wharfedale and MenstonLS29 edge addresses we pick up on the A65 run in or out
If your street isn't listed it's almost certainly still covered, Ilkley and the surrounding LS29 postcodes are all inside our normal working area.
Common Ilkley runs
- Bradford → Ilkleyfifteen miles by the A6038 over Hollins Hill and the A65, allow the best part of an hour with a sofa strapped up
- Ilkley villa → town-centre apartmentthe standard downsize, old settee away and the new one in on the same visit
- Burley in Wharfedale or Menston → Ilkleyshort A65 hop, usually a collection and a drop inside one slot
What it costs
What sets an Ilkley price is the size of the piece, the staircase it has to go up and how far the van has to sit from the door, never the distance from Bradford. There's no travel surcharge for coming to Ilkley from Bradford, and you get the price before we set off, not after. See how we quote for the full breakdown.
Frequently asked questions: sofa & bed delivery in Ilkley
Will a corner sofa get up a converted villa staircase?
Often, if it splits. The thing that decides it is the diagonal across the half-landing, not the width of the front door, because that is where the newel post and the turn meet. Send us a photo taken from the bottom of the flight and a rough width at the turn, and we will tell you before you buy rather than after.
Do I need a split divan base for an Ilkley house?
For anything above the ground floor in one of the old villas or the through-terraces off Leeds Road, almost certainly. A solid platform base will not come round a half-landing, and angling it does not help. Order it in two halves. The mattress itself flexes enough at the corners to go up on its side.
Can you take the old sofa away when you bring the new one?
Yes, on the same visit. We carry the old one out, load it, bring the new one in and take the old away with us, which is the usual pattern on an Ilkley downsize. What we do not do is clear a whole house, garage or garden, so it needs to be the furniture you are replacing.
