Three storeys, no lift, and an hour of A-road before the motorway
The villas are the thing to be honest about. Large three-storey gritstone houses along Wells Road and up the Middleton side, with cellars and no lift, hold far more than one Transit LWB will take. The van gives 3.4m by 1.3m by 1.7m, which is a flat or a small house in one go, not a three-storey villa with a cellar under it. Two hundred miles from home is the wrong place to discover that, so these are quoted from photos and a proper room-by-room list beforehand.
Getting away is the other half of it. There is no bypass, so the centre backs up at peak times and there is nowhere to stand a van on Leeds Road. The climbs onto the Middleton side are steep, narrow and blind-bended with no turning space, and many of the big houses sit behind long gravel or setted drives a van has to reverse out of. Fifteen miles of A6038 and A65 later you reach Bradford and the M606, and only then does the mileage start counting.
What Ilkley long distance & nationwide usually involves
- Ilkley has never been bypassed, so the A65 runs straight through as Leeds Road and Skipton Road and there is nowhere to stand a van at peak times, which is why a long run loads first thing
- Pay-and-display on Station Road and in the town-centre car parks runs seven days, 8am to 6pm, three hours maximum with no return within three hours, so the van works in planned trips
- Springs Lane is no waiting at any time, and Regent Road, Wells Road, Bolton Bridge Road and Bridge Lane mix resident permits with pay-and-display on those same hours
- Curly Hill, Nesfield Road and Langbar Road are steep, narrow and blind-bended with no turning space for a loaded long wheelbase van, so Middleton-side addresses are planned rather than attempted
- Three-storey villas and anything with a cellar are quoted from photos and a written list, because a two-hundred-mile job is not the one on which to find out it needed two loads

What it costs
The distance, the volume once we have seen the list, and whether it works as one day or an overnight are what set the price, and the fifteen miles from Bradford is not charged for. There's no travel surcharge for coming to Ilkley from Bradford, and you get the price before we set off, not after. See how we quote for the full breakdown.
Frequently asked questions: long distance & nationwide in Ilkley
Will our house fit in one van for a move to London?
If it is an Ashlands terrace or a town-centre apartment, very likely. If it is a three-storey villa on Wells Road with a cellar, almost certainly not. We ask for photos of every room plus the cellar and garage, and we tell you one load or two before you book, not on the morning.
Does coming out this far from Bradford cost extra?
No. Ilkley is inside the area we cover and there is no travel surcharge, even though it is around fifteen miles by the realistic van route over Hollins Hill and along the A65. The price is set by the distance of the actual journey and the size of the load.
How do you load on Wells Road when there is nowhere to park?
Carefully and early. Those streets are parked both sides, several of the villas sit behind long drives with no turning space, and the town-centre bays run to a three-hour maximum. We take the first slot of the day, walk the drive before reversing in, and plan the carry rather than improvise it.
