Three storeys, a cellar and a drive you have to reverse off
A Victorian gritstone villa is a lovely house and an awkward load. Wardrobes and bed frames come down two flights and round a half-landing turn, cellar contents have been there for decades, and the front door usually sits at the top of a short flight of stone steps. We plan the order before anything moves: heavy and awkward first while there's daylight and energy, boxes last, and anything that won't turn the landing comes apart.
The other half of the job is where the van stands. Plenty of the big houses sit behind long gravel or setted driveways with no turning space, which means reversing a long wheelbase Transit back out onto a road that has never been bypassed. The A65 runs through the middle of town as Leeds Road and Skipton Road, and there is nowhere to simply stop. We look at the approach before the day, not on it.
What Ilkley house removals usually involves
- Pay and display on Station Road and in the town-centre car parks runs every day of the week with a three-hour maximum, so a villa move is planned around a properly parked van rather than a topped-up ticket
- Springs Lane is no waiting at any time, so there we load from the nearest legal kerb and carry the difference
- A three-storey villa with a cellar often runs to two loads; a stone through-terrace off Leeds Road or around Ashlands usually goes in one
- The climbs onto the Middleton side, Curly Hill, Nesfield Road and Langbar Road, are narrow and blind-bended with no turning space, so we agree the approach and the reversing point in advance
- If the downsize ends with a new sofa or bed arriving at the apartment, we can carry the old one out and take it away on the same visit; what we don't do is clear a whole house
Where in Ilkley we work
- Wells Roadthree-storey villas with cellars, long drives and the heaviest carries in town
- Ben Rhyddingsubstantial detached houses in generous plots, drive-up loading and the easiest work in Ilkley
- Ashlandsstone through-terraces near the station where the van works off the street and everything leaves by the front door
- Middletonthe climb up Curly Hill and Nesfield Road, narrow, blind-bended and nowhere to turn a long van
- The Grove and Brook Streetconservation-area frontages with narrow pavements and restricted kerb space, where the town-centre apartments are
- Burley in Wharfedale and MenstonLS29 villages on the A65 run, often the other end of a move that never leaves Wharfedale
If your street isn't listed it's almost certainly still covered, Ilkley and the surrounding LS29 postcodes are all inside our normal working area.
Common Ilkley runs
- Bradford → Ilkleyfifteen miles up the A6038 over Hollins Hill then the A65 through Menston; the moor lanes look shorter and are not a van route
- Ilkley villa → town-centre apartmentthe classic downsize, usually staged across one long day
- Ilkley → Leeds or Bradfordfamilies heading back down the valley, normally a single day's work
What it costs
An Ilkley price is driven by the number of floors and the carrying distance from door to where the van can legally stand, not by the miles up the valley. There's no travel surcharge for coming to Ilkley from Bradford, and you get the price before we set off, not after. See how we quote for the full breakdown.
Frequently asked questions: house removals in Ilkley
Can you get a wardrobe down from the top floor of a Wells Road villa?
Usually, but it depends on the half-landing turn rather than the stairs themselves. Send photos of the landing and the wardrobe and we'll tell you honestly whether it comes down whole, comes down on its side, or needs the doors and back panel off first.
Where will the van stand on a narrow Ilkley street?
As close to your door as the restrictions allow. Regent Road, Wells Road and Bolton Bridge Road are mixed permit and pay and display on the same daily hours, so we take a legal position, load the awkward pieces first and carry the rest rather than risk a ticket mid-job.
Will a three-bedroom Ilkley house fit in one van load?
A three-bed terrace generally does. A three-storey villa with a cellar and a garage rarely does, because cellars hold far more than people remember. We'd rather plan two runs from the start than leave you with a half-empty house at six in the evening.
