Beckwithshaw: what to know before moving day
The village has a primary school, a village hall, the Smiths Arms and the Church of St Michael and All Angels, built in 1859 of Killinghall sandstone, and the cricket club, founded in 1885, plays on Killinghall Road. Moor Park, a gritstone country house of the same year with Dutch gables and a three-storey tower, has its old stables, barn range and gates listed separately. Shaw Green is the hamlet close by, where the listed farmhouse is dated 1732.
West of the village, Ten Acre Reservoir was built in 1875; with its dam failing, it was to be drained down in 2019 and turned into a wildlife area. Many of the parish's twelve listed buildings are gritstone farmhouses and barns, such as Low Buildings Barn of 1774 and Snell House Farmhouse, a laithe house with the barn under the same roof. A converted barn often has one wide opening and narrow inner doors, so measure the inner ones too.
How the van gets to Beckwithshaw
Otley Road is the way in from Harrogate: the B6162 runs from the town to Beckwithshaw. The B6161 also passes through, from the A61 at Killinghall to the A658 near Pool, which is useful from Bradford: the A658 runs from Bradford past Leeds Bradford Airport to Pool, and near the village the B6161 is named Leathley Lane and Pot Bank. Norwood Lane and Shaw Lane are the side roads.

Why do old records say the Pannal parish for Beckwithshaw?
Beckwithshaw was historically part of the ancient parish of Pannal. When Pannal village went into Harrogate in 1937, Beckwithshaw became the largest place in what was still called the Pannal parish, and the parish was only renamed Beckwithshaw in 2010.
Where is Beckwith, the place in the village's name?
About a mile east. Beckwith is the smaller settlement that gave Beckwithshaw its name. The parish now shares a grouped parish council with Haverah Park. Give the full address for either.
