Moving in Beckwith: what to know first
The lanes here are country roads, not estate streets. Howhill Road and Lady Lane are fast 60 mph lanes, and Howhill Quarry Road narrows to a single lane where it is not a private track. The houses are spread thinly across the fields around Beckwith, with fences, hedges and stiles along the field edges rather than pavements, and the Harrogate Ringway footpath crosses the area. A photo of the drive and the turning space at the house is the most useful thing to send when booking.
Beckwith: the local picture
Until the early 19th century this whole district was Beckwith with Rossett, one of the eleven constabularies of the Forest of Knaresborough, and part of the old parish grew into High Harrogate. Today the name survives on Beckwith House and Beckwith Cottages, reached by a private drive and a short unnamed lane, with gates on the field tracks around them.
The older stone houses nearby are listed. Howe House, probably of 1740, is gritstone with massive door jambs and a massive lintel, and Lund House is a late 18th-century gritstone house with sash windows and a three-bay rear wing, its barn listed separately. John's Wood and Lambert Wood are the woods on the slope, and old workings at Howhill Quarries sit just north. Stone houses of this age tend to have deep window reveals and tight halls, so measure the route for anything long.
How the van gets to Beckwith
Beckwith Head Road, which has a 7.5-tonne limit, and Howhill Road are the named roads that reach this side of the parish, with Lady Lane, Whinney Lane and Hill Top Lane close by. The run from Bradford uses the A658 past Leeds Bradford Airport towards Harrogate, estimated at roughly 40 to 50 minutes.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 40 to 50 minutes. That is an estimate, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.

Frequently asked questions: man with a van in Beckwith
Why is Beckwith counted with Beckwithshaw rather than Harrogate?
Because it lies inside Beckwithshaw parish, in the Washburn & Birstwith ward, about a mile east of the village itself. Beckwith Park, a green space in Harrogate, is a different place.
There is a gate on our drive. Will that hold things up?
Not if we know. Tell us whether the gate is kept locked and who will open it, and how far the house is from the lane, and the timing is planned around it.
Which road does the van use from Harrogate to Beckwith?
Usually Beckwith Head Road, which leaves the B6162 Otley Road on the edge of town. It carries a 7.5-tonne limit, which keeps heavy lorries off but does not affect a Transit van.
