Wentbridge: what to know before moving day
The village grew around the bridge carrying the Great North Road over the River Went, and the way in was always down a steep valley side, which is why the A1 was lifted onto the viaduct: 30 metres high, 94 metres long and Grade II listed. The old road, now the B6474 and named Old Great North Road, still drops through the village and crosses the river on the listed early 19th-century Went Bridge.
On that road are the Blue Bell Inn and the Wentbridge House Hotel, and St John the Evangelist, an 1878 church by Arthur Blomfield in magnesian limestone, stands north of the river. Other lanes on the map are Went Edge Road, Jackson's Lane and Moor Lane. English Heritage has put a Robin Hood blue plaque on the bridge. How the van gets to Wentbridge
The B6474, the old Great North Road, is the road through the village; to the south it runs on as Wentbridge Road towards Thorpe Audlin, and to the north the old road links up with Darrington. From Bradford the van takes the M62 east to Pontefract and comes down through Darrington, or joins the A1 and leaves it for the old road.
