Main Street is the spine of the village, with the Shoulder of Mutton pub on it and the post office opposite. Pinfold Lane, Manor Close and Rectory Court are near the middle, School Drive leads to the Church of England primary school, and St Peter's Church is close by. Springfield Crescent, Hodge Lane and Chapel Lane make up the rest, and Went Edge Road leads out of the village.
A footbridge crosses the Went to Little Smeaton, and from it paths run to Brockadale Nature Reserve, a steep-sided wooded valley run by the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, and on to Wentbridge. The old Hull and Barnsley Railway passed close by; its Kirk Smeaton station opened in 1885 and lost its passenger trains in 1932. The county boundary with South Yorkshire is just south of the houses.
How the van gets to Kirk Smeaton
From Bradford the M606 joins the M62 at junction 26. Head east to junction 33, which serves the A1, and go south on the A1, which crosses the Went valley at Wentbridge on the 1961 Wentbridge Viaduct. The village's own roads are Went Edge Road, New Road and Main Street, with Norton and Kirk Smeaton Road running south.
