Darrington: what to know before moving day
The village grew on the old Great North Road, 175 miles north of London, and the A1 bypass at the east end of the parish was built in the 1970s. At the heart of it are the village shop, the Spread Eagle, the 13th-century church of St Luke and All Saints and the Church of England school. The Church Reading Rooms on Phillips Lane hold a post office on Monday mornings.
The older buildings are in magnesian limestone: the church, the stable block of Darrington Hall and Church House, a former dovecote made into parish rooms in 1887 and later a house. Darrington Windmill, a brick tower mill, still stands west of the village. Other streets on the map include Estcourt Road, Manor Park, Wentworth Park Rise and Denby Road, and the Kyte Hotel, The Darrington and the Mid-Yorkshire Golf Club are in the parish too.
How the van gets to Darrington
From Bradford the van takes the M62 east and leaves for Pontefract, then heads south-east through Carleton; Carleton Road is the way into the village from that side. Pontefract's own link to the A1 is the junction at Darrington, and the Old Great North Road runs through the village itself.

Why does a Darrington address say Pontefract?
Because Pontefract is the post town for WF8. Darrington has its own civil parish, although it is in the Pontefract South ward of Wakefield Council and shares the WF8 postcode district with the town.
