Thorpe Audlin: what to know before moving day
The population more than doubled between the 1960s and 2000. OpenStreetMap shows the lanes, Thorpe Lane, Darning Lane and Common Lane, alongside closes such as Oakfield Park, Brentwood Close, Kimberly Close and Hillthorpe Drive, a group with Roman names, Chariot Way, Forum View and Hadrians Close, and the Thorpe Gate Estate. Roman coins have been found here, and the road from Doncaster to Pontefract is of Roman origin.
The community association meets in the Ramsden Hall on Darning Lane, the cricket club plays on Bridge Lane, and the Fox and Hounds and the Thorpe Lane Surgery are in the village. The oldest listed building is Thorpe Manor, from the 16th century or earlier, with Manor Farm's limestone barns beside it; Rogerthorpe Manor, to the south-west, has become a hotel.
How the van gets to Thorpe Audlin
Doncaster Road, the A639, runs past the village between Pontefract and the A1, with a listed milepost on its north-east side. The B6474, named Thorpe Lane and Wentbridge Road, runs east to Wentbridge. From Bradford the van comes along the M62 to Pontefract and then south on the A639 through East Hardwick.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 40 to 55 minutes. That is an estimate from route data, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.
