Utley: what to know before moving day
The Keighley to Skipton turnpike of the early 18th century became the dividing line between Low and High Utley. It was numbered the A629 in the 1930s and became the B6265, Skipton Road, when the Kildwick to Beechcliffe bypass opened in 1988. Green Head Lane and Green Head Road lead off it into High Utley, where St Mark's Church and its church hall are on Green Head Lane and Carlton Keighley, the secondary school, is on Green Head Road.
Several old houses are Grade II listed. Manor Farmhouse and Cottage dates from 1677, Utley House and 9 Birchwood Road in Low Utley are 17th-century stone houses with mullioned windows, and 4B, 6, 7 and 9 Croft House Lane are back-to-back houses of about 1800. In a back-to-back the doorway is on the front, so plan for everything to leave that way.
Utley Cemetery, opened in 1857 and covering 3.7 hectares, is the oldest cemetery maintained by Bradford Council, and the Gothic Revival Butterfield family chapel and vault inside it is listed. Across the River Aire is Keighley Golf Club, and Keighley's rugby union club plays at Rose Cottage in Utley.
How the van gets to Utley
Skipton Road is the road access Wikipedia names for Utley: from the town it is the A629 for the first stretch and then the B6265, which runs through Utley and on to Steeton. Spring Gardens Lane links Skipton Road with Green Head Lane for the upper streets, and Cemetery Lane leaves Skipton Road for the cemetery side. The Aire Valley bypass, the A629, runs along the valley floor for through traffic.
