Shelley: what to know before moving day
The village is laid out along the B6116, Huddersfield Road, where it meets Far Bank. A listed stone guide post still stands at that junction, and the Grade II house at 129 and 131 Huddersfield Road dates from 1703. Shelley Hall, a large 17th-century house, is listed Grade II*, and the old dry-stone pinfold is listed too. The Methodist church of 1785 to 1786 is off Far Bank to the west, and the Church of Emmanuel of 1868 is on Huddersfield Road to the east.
Everyday stops are within about 300 yards of each other: the post office and village hall near the Far Bank corner, the Star Garage, a Morrisons Daily, the fish and chip shop and the Flying Ferret, which used to be the Oddfellows. Homes are on Near Bank, Back Lane, Doctor Lane and School Terrace, and on the newer Westerley Way, Westerley Lane, Westerley Close and Bark Close. Shelley First School takes children to Year 5, and Shelley College, at the east end of the parish, serves Kirkburton, Denby Dale and Scissett.
How the van gets to Shelley
Shelley's road links are the B6116, which runs through the village, and the A629 Huddersfield to Penistone road, which is the way in from Huddersfield and so from Bradford. Far Bank leads off the B6116 to the west side of the village.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 35 to 45 minutes. That is an estimate from route data, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.

Which station do Shelley people use, Shepley or the Kirklees Light Railway?
Shepley station, on the Penistone Line, serves both Shepley and Shelley, with hourly trains to Huddersfield and to Sheffield by way of Barnsley. The Kirklees Light Railway also has a terminus at Shelley, just under a mile east of Shepley station, but that is a narrow-gauge heritage line.
