Moving in Roydhouse: what to know first
Roydhouse sits high near the top of the ridge, but Drinker Lane is fairly level along its length, so the lanes are high rather than steep. There are a few dozen houses, with farm buildings and a groundworks yard among them, and the van stops on the road outside the house, so say if parked cars or a gate could be in the way.
The lanes round the hamlet, Drinker Lane, Wool Row Lane, Green House Hill, Cross Lane, Titus Lane and Jagger Lane, are all through lanes, and Titus Lane and Jagger Lane run at 40 mph, so the van turns into Roydhouse itself rather than stopping on them. The Three Acres at the corner is the landmark to give.
Roydhouse: the local picture
The name is old: the hamlet was recorded as le Roides. Today it is a short residential road, also called Roydhouse, off Drinker Lane, with The Three Acres, a pub and restaurant, right at the corner and Wool Row Lane and Titus Lane the other roads close by. Baildon Dike runs about 400 metres away.
The tower on the skyline is the Emley Moor transmitting station, a 319-metre concrete tower that began transmitting in 1971. It is listed at Grade II and is the tallest freestanding structure in the United Kingdom, which makes it a handy landmark if you are guiding a driver in. Shelley is the nearest village, and The Three Acres uses Shelley in its address.

Frequently asked questions: man with a van in Roydhouse
The Three Acres says Shelley in its address. Which name goes on our booking?
Either works, as long as HD8 8LR and the house number or name are on it. The postcode is what guides the van to Drinker Lane, not the village name printed above it.
Does Roydhouse have a parish council?
Yes, it is in Kirkburton parish, whose council also covers Shelley, Flockton, Highburton and other villages. Kirklees Council runs the main services such as bins and council tax.
Are the lanes to Roydhouse steep?
Not very. The hamlet is high up on a ridge, but Drinker Lane is nearly level along its length, so the climbing is over once the van is up.
