Quarmby: what to know before moving day
The old heart is Quarmby Fold. Parts of Quarmby Hall there date from the 16th century, with mullioned and transomed windows, and the stone houses around the fold are from the 18th and early 19th centuries, many of them listed. On Quarmby Road at Cliff End is another listed group, one house dated 1829, and the old punishment stocks are still marked on the map. The manor goes back further still: Ilbert de Lacy held it at the time of the Domesday Book.
Most homes are on later streets: the Reinwood Road side, with Reinwood Infant and Junior schools and the recreation ground, and the avenues off Oakes Road South such as Wheatfield, Hayfield and Cornfield Avenue. Holly Bank, a mid-19th-century house whose stables are dated 1853, and Rein Wood are among the bigger listed houses. How the van gets to Quarmby
Quarmby Road is the spine. It starts from Oakes Road, which meets the A640 New Hey Road at Oakes, and runs on past Cliff End to Lowerhouses Road, with Reinwood Road and Cliffe End Road leaving it along the way. From the town centre the A640 is the direct route out, through Marsh.
