New Farnley: what to know before moving day
The village grew in the 19th century when Edward Armitage opened the Farnley Iron Works and Farnley Fireclay and built houses for the workers. It took in two older settlements, Upper Moor Side and Low Moor Side, and some buildings there date from the late 17th and early 18th centuries. Several gritstone cottages on Low Moor Side are Grade II listed, along with Wellholme Farmhouse, from the late 18th century.
Most homes now sit on Lawns Lane and the closes around it, such as Lawns Green, Lawns Square, Stephenson Way and the Barkers Well streets, with Low Moorside, Wolley Avenue and the Castle Ings streets further west. The village has a Co-op with a post office, Craven's fish and chip shop, a medical centre, St James's church and a community centre owned by residents.
How the van gets to New Farnley
Lawns Lane, a 30 mph road, runs up from Whitehall Road, the A58, into the middle of the village, and Low Moorside leaves Lawns Lane for the western streets. From Bradford the A650 crosses the A58 on the Drighlington bypass, and the A58 then runs as Whitehall Road through New Farnley towards Leeds, with Lawns Lane turning off it.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 20 to 30 minutes. That is an estimate from route data, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.

Several of the cottages there are listed gritstone buildings from the 17th to 19th centuries, so measure the front door and stairs before booking a large sofa or wardrobe.
