Grassington: what to know before moving day
The centre is a small cobbled square with Main Street running up from it, lined with shops, pubs and cafes, and the old houses sit in folds and yards behind: Chamber End Fold, Broughton Fold, Pletts Fold and Gills Fold among them. Many are 17th and 18th-century gritstone, such as 11 Scar Street of 1623 and the houses at Chamber End Fold, which date from 1685 and were later split into three, one of them on three floors. If your house is up a fold or yard, expect the van to stop on the street and the furniture to be carried the last stretch, and tell us roughly how far that is.
Grassington gets very busy. It is the main tourist centre in Upper Wharfedale, it stood in for Darrowby in the Channel 5 series All Creatures Great and Small, and it holds a 1940s weekend every September and Christmas markets in winter. Book around those dates if you can. Away from the centre the map shows residential streets such as Raines Meadows, Hardy Meadows and Springfield Road, and the site of the old Grassington and Threshfield station, across the river, is now a housing estate.
How the van gets to Grassington
The B6265 from Skipton is the road in. It comes up through Rylstone and Cracoe, crosses the River Wharfe on Grassington Bridge as Station Road, and leaves east as Hebden Road towards Hebden and Pateley Bridge. The bridge dates from the 17th century, widened in 1780. From Bradford, go to Skipton first by the Aire Valley road and the A629.

Is Grassington a village or a town?
Both names get used. It was granted a market charter in 1282, which gave it market town status, but with around 1,100 people many call it a village. For the council it is a civil parish run by North Yorkshire Council.
Which side of the river is the old station estate on?
The old station was shared by Grassington and Threshfield and stood on the west side of the Wharfe, not in Grassington itself. Its site is now housing, so if your address is on that estate, give the full postcode so the van comes to the right side of the river.
