An hour of Dales A-roads before the motorway even starts
That front leg changes how the day is built. A collection here goes early, because leaving at nine means joining a motorway at ten with three or four hundred miles still to run. The High Street complicates it further: the general market takes it on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, and the bays go with it, so a flat above a shop gets loaded before the stalls set up or booked for a day without one.
Those town-centre flats are the other Skipton speciality. Reached from rear yards and narrow ginnels, up steep back staircases with no lift, they take real time to empty, and the canal crossings around Coach Street are humpback bridges with tight approach turns for a long van. None of which is a problem if it is planned. All of which is a problem at eight o'clock on a Saturday with a market going up around you.
What Skipton long distance & nationwide usually involves
- Market days are Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday and the High Street bays disappear, so central collections happen before the stalls or on another day
- Flats above the High Street and Sheep Street shops are reached from rear yards and ginnels, with steep back staircases and no lift, so allow proper time for the carry
- The canal crossings around Coach Street and the basin are narrow humpback bridges with tight approaches, which decides the route in and out for a loaded long van
- The terraces off Broughton Road and Water Street are narrow, parked both sides and have no off-street loading at all
- The van holds 3.4m by 1.3m by 1.7m, which suits a flat or a small house; a Gargrave Road family house with a full garage is quoted as more than one trip, not squeezed

Common Skipton runs
- Skipton to Lancaster or the North Westa common student run, close enough to be a there-and-back in a day
- Skipton to Londonthe valley first, then motorway; realistically an early start or an overnight at the far end
- Skipton to Bradford and the M606the first leg of nearly every long run from here, down the A650 through Keighley and Shipley
What it costs
The valley leg, the total distance and what actually needs to go on the van are what set the price, fixed and agreed before you book. There's no travel surcharge for coming to Skipton from Bradford, and you get the price before we set off, not after. See how we quote for the full breakdown.
Frequently asked questions: long distance & nationwide in Skipton
Why does a Skipton job need such an early start?
Because the motorway is about an hour away before you have driven a single mile of the actual journey. The A629 and A650 down the valley through Keighley, Bingley and Shipley is not fast. Leave at seven and London is a day. Leave at ten and it is not.
Can you empty a flat above a High Street shop?
Yes, and it is a job we know. Access is from the rear yard through a ginnel and up a steep back staircase with no lift, so it is slower than a house and it needs the furniture assessed first. Send photos of the staircase turn and the doorway.
Is it the same van all the way to the destination?
Yes. Loaded at your Skipton address, unloaded at the other end, same vehicle, same driver, nothing transferred and nothing shared with other households. There is one passenger seat if you want to travel with your things, though most people drive down separately and meet us there.
