Golcar: what to know before moving day
Town End is the centre: the Co-op, a bakery, the pharmacy and the post office stand within about 50 metres of each other, and Church Street, Leymoor Road and Swallow Lane all start close by. St John the Evangelist, opened in 1829, is close by, and the Colne Valley Museum occupies three 1840s weavers' cottages. Golcar was a weaving centre, and the Golcar ward has 165 listed buildings, many of them weavers' cottages.
A network of footpaths, marked on the map as the Golcar Lily Ginnel Trail and paths such as Ginnel No 7, runs between the houses. Where a house is reached only by a ginnel, the van stops at the nearest street and the rest is carried. Knowl Road, Manor Road, Carr Top Lane and Banks Road are some of the streets the houses are on.
How the van gets to Golcar
There are two main ways up. From the valley, the A62 Manchester Road leads through Milnsbridge to the roads climbing to Golcar. From the top, the route comes in via Scapegoat Hill from the A640 New Hey Road, which meets the M62 at junction 23, Outlane. The van from Bradford uses the M62 either way.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 30 to 40 minutes. That is an estimate from route data, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.
