Gamble Hill: what to know before moving day
When Leeds Corporation surveyed the land in the early 1960s, it found the site riddled with late 18th-century shafts and cavities from old workings for Elland Flags, stone that historic maps did not show. The layout of the estate, and especially where its high-rise blocks would stand, had to be changed as a result.
Gamble Hill Drive is the main road, a 20 mph loop with a long run of closes named after it: Gamble Hill Lawn, Place, Fold, Close, Croft, Chase, Cross, Vale, Walk, View, Rise and Green. Around it are the Poplar streets, the Greenthorpe streets and Queensthorpe Avenue, and apartment buildings such as Gamble Hill Grange, Gamble Hill Croft, Poplar Court and Poplar Mount. Greenhill Primary School and the Greenthorpe Allotments are on the edge of the estate, and the Leeds to Bradford railway runs past it.
How the van gets to Gamble Hill
Gamble Hill Drive joins both Pudsey Road, the B6154, and Henconner Lane, which is one-way in places. From Bradford the A647 Stanningley bypass leads towards Bramley, and Pudsey Road brings the van to the estate entrance.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 15 to 30 minutes. That is an estimate from route data, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.
