Moving in Eshton: what to know first
Eshton is reached on lanes, not streets. Eshton Road climbs north from Gargrave, and at Eshton the lane is recorded as about 3 metres wide, so meeting another vehicle means one of you reversing to a gateway. Winterburn Lane carries on north over Nappa Bridge, and the drives to the farms are private lanes, some of them rough tracks, so check yours is firm enough for a loaded van after rain.
For the flats in Eshton Hall and the converted mews, the loading point is the courtyard or drive rather than the lane. Ask the management or neighbours where a van can stand for the length of the job.
Eshton: the local picture
Eshton Hall was built in 1825 to 1827 by George Webster of Kendal for Mathew Wilson, one of the earliest houses in the Elizabethan Revival style and listed Grade II*. After spells as a school and a nursing home, it was converted in 2005 into 18 apartments with several new staircases. Its stables and coach house, a U-shaped block with corner turrets, are now homes too, as Eshton Mews and the Coach House. For a flat in the hall, check which staircase serves your door and how wide its turns are before booking a large sofa.
Beyond the hall, the listed homes are farmhouses: St Helen's Farmhouse, a five-bay house of the mid 18th century, and Eshton Grange, dated 1753 and three storeys high. St Helen's Well, a spring pool of probably medieval origin, is also listed. Eshton Beck runs past the hall grounds, and Ash Keys Caravan Park is just along the lane.
How the van gets to Eshton
Eshton Road leaves Gargrave northwards, off the A65, and leads up to the hamlet. The lane at Eshton is only about 3 metres wide, with Winterburn Lane heading on north. From Bradford the van goes to Skipton on the A650 and A629 and then out on the A65; the estimate is roughly 40 to 50 minutes.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 40 to 50 minutes. That is an estimate, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.

Frequently asked questions: man with a van in Eshton
Is it possible to move into a top-floor flat at Eshton Hall?
Yes. Loading and unloading are part of the fixed price, stairs and all. Send photos of the staircase and landing so we know how big pieces will turn before the day.
Eshton, Flasby and Winterburn addresses look alike. How does the van tell them apart?
Eshton is its own parish, but it is so small that its 2011 census figures were counted with Flasby with Winterburn next door. The BD23 3 postcodes run across all three, so give the house or flat name.
What landmarks help a driver find Eshton?
Coming up from Gargrave, the Yorkshire Water pumping station and Ash Keys Caravan Park are near the lane, with St Helen's Well and the hall grounds either side of Eshton Beck. Give the hall, mews or farm name as well as the postcode.
