Castley: what to know before moving day
Most of the long railway viaduct across the Wharfe valley stands within Castley parish. The Heritage List calls it the Wharfedale Viaduct: sandstone, 21 arches, built in 1849 for the Leeds to Thirsk Railway, and it still carries the Leeds to Harrogate line. Castley Hall and Manor Farmhouse, a gritstone house with a stone slate roof, is the main listed home.
The two other listed items are small but useful for finding your way: a boundary stone of 1767 marking the edge of the Forest of Knaresborough, on Castley Lane, and a milepost on the south side of Harrogate Road inscribed Dudleyhill and Killinghall. With so few houses, a house name counts for more than a number here.
