Moving in Bland Hill: what to know first
Bland Hill is a road junction with houses around it rather than a village. Broad Dubb Road meets the B6451 here, and the B6451 itself changes name and speed: Brame Lane is a 40 mph stretch and Lower Norwood Road a 60 mph one, both unlit. Swinsty Fold is the small group of homes close by. An unlit B road is not where you want a van standing for long, so if the house has a drive or yard, tell us and the van will use it.
The listed houses of Norwood parish are all gritstone with stone slate roofs. Bland Hill Farmhouse has two storeys and two bays, with a third bay that is part of a farm building, and Whistle House has a five-bay barn attached. With a converted barn or an old farmhouse, measure the doorways and stairs and send the figures with your photos.
Bland Hill: the local picture
Norwood has no village of its own. Its 216 residents at the 2011 census are spread among hamlets and farms, Bland Hill and Norwood Bottom among them, and the parish takes in the eastern side of Swinsty Reservoir. Locals say the name as "Norood". Until 1950 the parish was called Clifton with Norwood, and it is within Nidderdale National Landscape.
Norwood Social Hall stands at the junction, and a site called Bland Hill School lies about 400 metres off. The older houses are gritstone: Bland Hill Farmhouse, mid to late 18th century with mullioned windows, and Whistle House with its five-bay barn are both Grade II listed, and Scow Hall, a 16th-century timber-framed house later cased in stone, is Grade II* and under a kilometre away.
How the van gets to Bland Hill
From Otley the B6451 climbs as Brame Lane and becomes Lower Norwood Road before reaching Bland Hill, where it is a 40 mph road. Broad Dubb Road leaves it here, and Smithson's Lane and Watson's Lane are the lanes close by. Bradford to Bland Hill should take roughly 35 to 50 minutes on our estimate.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 35 to 50 minutes. That is an estimate, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.

Frequently asked questions: man with a van in Bland Hill
Norwood is on the address. Is there a Norwood village the van should head for?
No. Norwood parish has no village; its homes are spread among hamlets and farms such as Bland Hill and Norwood Bottom. Give the house name and full HG3 postcode, such as HG3 1TD, and the van will find the right lane.
Coming from Harrogate, which road leads to Bland Hill?
Broad Dubb Road. From Harrogate the van takes the B6162 Otley Road and the B6161, then Norwood Lane on to Broad Dubb Road, which ends at the B6451 at Bland Hill. It is about 6.9 miles from central Harrogate.
There is a Bland Hill School nearby. Can the van use it as a landmark?
Better not. It is an archaeological site about 400 metres from the junction, not a working school building. Norwood Social Hall at the junction is easier to spot, and the HG3 postcode does the rest.
