Birstall Smithies: what to know before moving day
The name is old and industrial. Birstall Smithies was an early slag-smelting site, and excavations there in 1965 turned up a Roman tiled mosaic. Smithies Beck still runs through, Ridings Wood lies towards White Lee, and the old Batley to Birstall railway branch ran across the area.
The housing clusters round Smithies Moor Lane, Smithies Moor Rise, Smithies Moor Close and Smithies Moor Crescent, with short older streets such as Mill Street, Park Street and Bridge Street nearer the main road. Along Bradford Road you pass car dealers, a Kwik Fit, the Smithies service station, Darsons furniture shop and The Greyhound pub. That makes the stretch easy to describe but not a good place to stand a van; if your address is on Bradford Road itself, a side street may be the better loading spot, and it can be agreed when you book.
How the van gets to Birstall Smithies
The A652 Bradford Road and the A62 Huddersfield Road both pass within about 250 metres of the Smithies Moor streets, and Smithies Lane links across. From Bradford, head for junction 27 of the M62, come into Birstall, then follow the A652 south towards Batley.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 20 to 30 minutes. That is an estimate from route data, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.
